New Jersey Tames The Monster, Shuts Down Columbus At Home
The Jackets didn't waste any time. At 4:21 into the first period, Cole Sillinger took a nifty pass from Yegor Chinakhov and blasted a one-timer past Vanecek. Chinakhov and Gaudreau assisted on the goal. The Jackets would get a power play opportunity at 4:58 that was quickly nullified by an Ivan Provorov interference penalty, setting up a brief 4-on-4 chance and then a Devils power play which was killed.
Twenty-eight seconds into the second period, The Devils John Marino tied the game at one. Less than a minute later, the Jackets would go to the box for tripping giving the Devils a chance to take the lead, but that CBJ would kill it. With 11:20 left in the second, the Columbus net was left wide open. The Devils Alexander Holtz took a pass from Cal Foote and scored to make it 2-1. Elvis had no clue where the puck was. Nico Hischier scored to make it 3-1 Devils with under seven to play in the second. Just around a minute later Nathan Bastian was parked in the crease and scored to make it 4-1. Why there was a Devil just camped in the crease is anybody's guess.
The third period saw a little push from the Jackets, but nothing serious for the first 10 minutes or so. The Devils gave the Jackets hardly anything. They did have a few good chances with some extended offensive zone time, but the CBJ just couldn't solve Vanecek. Cole Sillinger would seemingly score his second of the night, but upon review, it was deemed to be way offside, so the score would stay at 4-1.
The Devils win 4-1, sending the Jackets into a five-game road trip with a loss.
