Elliotte Friedman reports that the Blue Jackets are one of the teams interested in the New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba.
This news comes after a report from Larry Brooks and the New York Post that the Rangers are moving on from Trouba either via trade or waivers today.
A further report from Friedman said that there are a handful of teams that are interested in acquiring Trouba, but with his no-trade clause, it makes it hard.
This is why the possibility of waivers has been floated around. If the Rangers were to place him on the wire, all 31 other NHL teams would have the option to claim him regardless of his NTC. This is what happened to Barclay Goodrow this past off-season.
If the Blue Jackets are indeed interested, he would be a great pickup and addition to the blue line. However, at what cost?
Well, given that he makes $8 million for the remainder of his season and next. The cost may not be as high as you think. Truthfully, if the Rangers are willing to waive him to move the cap hit off of the books for free, then other teams' offers likely have dropped in value.
The Blue Jackets are well stocked in draft capital, and the Rangers are without a second and third round pick in the upcoming NHL draft.
It may be as simple as a second-round pick and a mid-tier prospect or roster player that gets the deal. Names like Jordan Harris or even Daemon Hunt could be the players going the other way along with a second-round pick.
The Blue Jackets also have enough cap space to take on the entire Trouba contract, making them an even stronger suitor for him.
