The Columbus Blue Jackets' forward Dmitri Voronkov has been subject to trade rumours since the NHL Draft. Just hours before the draft started, the Blue Jackets were trying to work on a trade with the New York Islanders for Noah Dobson and Voronkov's name was involved in that trade.
Now, a month later, Voronkov's name is still out there on the trade block according to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period.
This past weekend, Pagnotta reported that there are two teams linked to Voronkov, one of which is the Islanders who have had interested for some time. The other team interested in the Buffalo Sabres who are looking to change up their mix of young players in hopes to finally find success.
The Blue Jackets don't need to part with the 25-year old, who finished tied for fourth in the team in goals last season with 23. He also just re-signed with the organization on a the-year deal that carries an average annual value (AAV) of $4.1 million.
However, if they did decide to part with him, it would likely mean that the Blue Jackets are trying to acquire someone big. It wouldn't make sense for Columbus to trade Voronkov ti just trade him. However, if they were trying to trade for Bowen Byram or Alex Tuch from the Sabres, it would make sense.
It's a bit different with the Islanders, now that Dobson is no longer there, these two teams don't make a ton of sense as trade partners. Especially, when you consider it could involve Voronkov.
If the Blue Jackets are going to part with Voronkov, it would likely be as part of a much larger deal. Or else, they would gladly keep him and let him continue to improve on with this roster.
