Team Latvia, Led By Elvis Merzlikins, Beats Poland In Their Opening Game At The World Championships

Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins stopped 17 of 21 Polish shots today in a 5-4 Latvian win.

Merzlikins finished with a .809 save % for the game.

Latvia battled back by scoring three goals in the third period before surrendering the tying goal with just over three minutes left in the game. That goal would ensure overtime. Latvian forward Kaspars Daugavins won it for Latvia just 3:29 into the OT period.

The overtime win for Latvia now gives them two points in the Group B standings behind Sweden, Germany, and Kazakhstan who all won their opening game.
