With the news today that Yegor Chinakhov has requested a trade away from the Columbus Blue Jackets, many are left to wonder what his worth is.

Many Jackets fans think it's higher than it actually is, and that's a problem for anyone thinking Don Waddell is going to fetch anything of value for him, especially since it just went public.

    Let's look at the details.

Contract: Chinakhov recently signed a two-year, $4.2 million contract extension with the Blue Jackets, averaging $2.1 million per year on Jun 21, 2024. He will be an RFA after this next season.

Strengths: Chinakhov has a strong wrist shot and a powerful slap shot, and routinely has the strongest shot in any given game. He has a lethal shot that, when used, can score at any time.

Weaknesses: His consistency and overall impact need to improve. Being on the ice and playing will be his biggest strength, but he has to be there. Injuries have slowed him down big time. He's never played more than 62 games in a season, missing time for injuries every year. In 2023-24, he only played 53 games, but set career highs for goals, assists, and points. Last season, he was on pace to beat those numbers, but a back injury took him out. He only played 30 games last season.

Potential Trade Value: Chinakhov is young, and has a decent contract, so there would more than likely be a few teams that would want to take a look at him. Given the right situation, he could thrive, but who would that be?

Being that he's not a top-line winger on most teams, his value won't be very high. I wouldn't hold my breath in getting anything of value back. Maybe a 4th or 5th round pick... Maybe. With his trade request going public, this hurts any chances of Don Waddell getting anything of substance back.

Chinakhov said that he had some "misunderstandings" with head coach Dean Evason. This meant that after he came back from a bad back, and was scratched down the stretch. When he came back, he played in 9 games, had zero goals and had a single point. He also only had 13 shots in those 9 games.
