The Dallas Stars fell to the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-1 in what was called the "worst loss of the season."

The first game of a four-game road trip starting in Philadelphia went about as poorly as the Dallas Stars could have imagined.
What should have been a good match up, Dallas ranked third and Philadelphia surprising everyone in second in their respective divisions, ended up being a poor showing for the Stars.
The Stars started off hot in the first minute with two quick chances but fell off hard after that. Tyler Seguin recorded the first shot on goal at the 29 second mark of the first period and then the Stars did not have another shot on goal until nearly half way through the second period, when Esa Lindell led an odd man rush up the ice while shorthanded, but was stopped twice by Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson.
The first period ended with the shots on goal in Philadelphia's favor by a lopsided 14-1 margin. Unbelievably, it got worse from there, as Jake Oettinger faced 43 shots while the Stars were only able to get 15 shots on goal through 60 minutes.
Here are a couple takeaways from the game:

The Stars had a shot on goal in the first minute and then didn't have a shot on goal for nearly 30 minutes after that. They could not move the puck through the neutral zone, forcing them to dump it down into the offensive zone where they were losing almost every puck battle. They could not make passes to set anything up even when they were finally in the offensive zone.
This comes just one game after head coach Pete DeBoer shuffled the lines to get some offense going with certain lines/players. The first game was an offensive success, with the Stars winning easily 5-1 over the Los Angeles Kings. Tonight, those shuffled lines looked like they have never played together before.
Even when Tyler Seguin scored the only goal of the game, it wasn't an extended offensive zone possession or rush chance. Credit Matt Duchene for always hounding the puck and forcing the turn over in the Flyers end, where the puck found Seguin and he was able to pick the top corner of the net.
Since Oettinger has been back from his injury, his save percentage is at a .924% in the last three and a half games. But that is not because he is getting help from his defense. Once again, the defense has allowed him to get peppered from high-danger areas, leaving him high and dry.

Miro Heiskanen has now missed seven games and one could say that his absence is really starting to make the heart grow fonder. The defense without Heiskanen, though the team has been winning games, has a massive spotlight on it and is revealing a lot of weak spots. It's something the team should monitor moving forward.
Here is the shots on goal in the last game Heiskanen played in:

Letting the goalies take an onslaught of shots is not a sustainable way to defend or win hockey games. The Stars will get Heiskanen back soon but the underlying issues will still be there,
Daryl Reaugh talked about the Flyers playing with speed from the start of the broadcast, and it was clear that the team never caught up to the pace that Philadelphia set.
It looked like the team was fresh off the first leg of a back-to-back with tired legs and less energy to get to loose pucks. The Flyers out-skated the Stars, and continued to be first to pucks all night.
It was a notably rough night for Joel Hanley, who over-committed across to Thomas Harley's side of the ice leading to a goal by Sean Walker.
Later on, he came in late on a Scott Laughton breakaway and hooked him enough to draw a penalty shot, where he scored on Oettinger. In real time, it looked like Oettinger was in position to make the initial save on Laughton had Hanley not committed a penalty shot worthy infraction.
Finally, in a goal that will be replayed a lot by the NHL in highlight clips, Owen Tippett put a spin move on Hanley and sauced a backhand shot top shelf for a goal worthy of Sportscenter Top 10.
The Stars head to the greater New York City area to play back-to-backs against the Devils and Islanders this weekend, so this performance will need to be flushed from memory sooner rather than later.
