Dallas hosts Seattle on the second night of a back-to-back at the American Airlines Center.

After a 3-0 win over the New York Islanders in their home opener Saturday night, the Dallas Stars are right back at it Sunday with another home game as the Seattle Kraken come to town.

Jake Oettinger posted the 11th shutout of his career, and veterans Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn scored en route to victory. Seguin scored twice, once into the empty net, and Oettinger was able to stop all 34 shots that came his way, carrying the team at times where the play was sloppy, as to be expected with early season hockey.

Matt Dumba took a tumble and came off hobbling in his second shift of the game. He played the remainder of the first period, but did not come back out for the second period. Head coach Pete DeBoer labeled him day-to-day until they can do some more testing, so Brendan Smith will slot in on defense and make his Dallas debut.

Meanwhile, the Kraken are also on the second half of a back-to-back, having faced the Minnesota Wild last night. Seattle completed a comeback 5-4 win in a shoot out. Tye Kartye and Jared McCann both scored a goal, but the rest was left to Jordan Eberle. He had two goals during regulation and scored in the shootout to give the Kraken the win.

When playing each other, the Stars are 7-1-1 vs Seattle, including being 4-0-1 at home. Heiskanen has tallied 11 points in nine games against the Kraken. The teams had a memorable playoff series in the second round of the 2023 postseason, where Dallas prevailed 2-1 in Game 7.

What to watch for:

  • Mason Marchment leads the team in points through the first two games with four. He and Seguin are tied for first in goals with two. Marchment also holds the only power-play goal of the season.
  • Going into tonight's game, the power-play is 1 for 6, and they were unable to convert on two chances last night against the Islanders. The Stars have seemed to struggle with their entries and puck management on power plays thus far.
  • Casey DeSmith will make his debut with the Stars. DeSmith has only faced the Kraken twice in his career, with a record of 1-1-0. During the 2021-22 season, he allowed one goal on 29 shots with a save percentage of .966%, and in the 2022-23 season, he allowed two goals on 29 shots with a save percentage of .931%.
