The Dallas Stars are looking to redeem themselves against the Vancouver Canucks just one night after their comeback effort against the Edmonton Oilers fell short Saturday.
Last night's game was the Stars first game featuring new trade deadline addition Mikko Rantanen, who had one goal and one assist, both on the power play.
However, through the first two periods of the game, the team did not make the best first impression, falling behind 5-1 after scoring the first goal of the game about five minutes in.
In the third period, it was Rantanen that got the team going by scoring the second goal of the game on the power play. Then Jamie Benn scored 11 seconds later, bringing Dallas to within two goals of the Oilers.
Although they would add another goal and have just over 10 minutes to find the equalizer, the Stars fell short by a final of 5-4. Dallas proved that no matter the score of deficit they are still a threat to make it a game, even if a lot of those scenarios this season have seen the team come up one goal short.
And while the Stars try to bounce back after last night's game, they might have to do it with one less Finn, even though they gained a new one just days prior.
Roope Hintz took a puck to the face in the second period and did not return. Head coach Pete DeBoer announced after the game that Hintz went to the hospital and stated it wasn't "serious, serious."
It has not been announced if he will be available today against Vancouver.
The Canucks are on a two-game win streak after defeating the Minnesota Wild 3-1. Elias Petterssen snapped a 15 game goal drought when he opened up the scoring in the first period. The star forward has had a down year, mired by some issues with former teammate J.T. Miller, who was traded to the New York Rangers because the two could not get along.
Captain and reigning Norris Trophy winning defenseman Quinn Hughes has been in and out of the lineup since before the Four Nations Face-Off tournament and has not played since March 1st. It has not been announced if he will be healthy enough to draw into the lineup against the Stars or not. Hughes is a huge part of the Canucks offense and the quarterback of their power play, but he is also by far their best defenseman. This could cause some struggles for Vancouver against the explosive Stars offense.
Jake Oettinger got the nod last night, which likely means that Casey DeSmith will get the start in Vancouver. DeSmith is on a five-game win streak and has not lost since January 18th. In that time he has a .924% save percentage and has a goals-against average of 2.20. After the win against the New Jersey Devils, DeBoer gave high praise for DeSmith, citing that he has been great for the Stars and allowed them to continue to be succesful when he is in net, which is a big contribution to where they are in the standings.
Puck drop is at 9 p.m. CST and can be seen locally on Victory+ and out-of-market on ESPN+.
