With today being Valentine's Day, Frank Seravalli played hockey's Dr. Love and matchmaker for six trade targets and had Chris Tanev going to the Dallas Stars.
The breakdown of Seravalli's trade is:
Stars receive: Chris Tanev
Flames receive: A conditional 2024 2nd Rd Pick that can become a 1st Rd Pick if Dallas reaches the West Final.
This trade would greatly benefit the Stars and fill in the glaring need they have had all season. Throughout the season multiple players have skated alongside Miro Heiskanen on the top pairing but no one has really stuck.
An upgrade on 39-year-old Ryan Suter would help both Suter and the Stars. Suter can play less ice time and in more favourable matchups. Tanev is listed at 6'2 and is 34 years old but still moves around the ice very well. His skating isn't what his game is known for. His defensive capabilities at both even strength and on the penalty kill is where he thrives.
Currently, the Stars rank 22nd in the league in blocked shots per 60 minutes (14.93) and Tanev is second in the league (151) in that category. Adding Tanev to a penalty kill that already sits in 8th place would only help improve it.
The Stars have $1,923,854 in deadline cap space at the moment. Tanev's current contract is $4.5M. Some cap maneuvering would have to be made. Whether that's trading away players to make cap room or working in some salary retention with the Flames.
The Stars have just their first, second, fifth and seventh-round picks in this year's draft but with the prospects they have accumulated in the previous drafts, they can afford to move some picks to make a strong run at the Stanley Cup.
If Jim Nill believes in this team, this trade is what could help them reach their ultimate goal.
