Stars assistant GM Scott White is a leading candidate for Toronto's top hockey job, a testament to Dallas' enduring contender status.

The Dallas Stars have set the standard as one of the NHL’s most consistent contenders in recent years, and that success is now drawing attention from around the league.

According to Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast, the Toronto Maple Leafs are zeroing in on two finalists for their vacant general manager position. Among them is Stars assistant GM Scott White, a longtime architect behind Dallas’ sustained success.

Another leading candidate is John Chayka, the former president of hockey operations and general manager of the Arizona Coyotes. Reporting from Friedman and Nick Kypreos suggests Chayka may hold a slight edge in the process, though no decision has been finalized.

White’s candidacy reflects the growing demand for executives tied to Dallas’ winning model, especially after general manager Jim Nill was recently signed to a new contract extension. Over the past several seasons, the Stars have remained firmly in the Stanley Cup conversation, thanks in part to strong drafting, development, and roster construction.

White’s path to this point has been a steady climb through the hockey ranks. He began his career in the NCAA with Michigan Tech Huskies, serving on the coaching staff from 1994 to 1999. He then moved to the ECHL as a head coach before transitioning into management.

His front-office career with Dallas began in 2005-06 with the then-Iowa Stars. White remained with the organization as it evolved, eventually becoming director of hockey operations for Dallas in 2013-14. He was promoted to assistant general manager ahead of the 2016-17 season, a role he has held ever since.

Now, with Toronto searching for new leadership, White’s experience and track record have placed him firmly in the spotlight.
