Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports - Monday Morning Skate Update: Tanev's Arrival Unclear, Hanley Waived, Injury Updates

The Dallas Stars got a well-deserved day off on Sunday following a hard-fought 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks in a shootout at the American Airlines Center. Dallas maintains its hold on first place in the Central Division at 37-17-9 for 83 points.

With 12 games in 22 days during the month of February and three back-to-backs, the Stars haven't had much practice time. Coach Pete DeBoer is glad the pace of the schedule is lighter in March, allowing the club to refine some basics.

"You forget the value of (Practice) until you get back out there and start working on those details again and see your group working through that stuff," DeBoer told reporters during Monday morning skate. "You re-remember how important that is. It's been a while, and I like the fact that our schedule sets up that we have some practice time going forward.

DeBoer briefed the media on several topics, including Chris Tanev's immigration issues, Joel Hanley being put on waivers and the injury status of two key players.

    Tanev's Timeline Still Not Clear

The Stars acquired Chris Tanev last week in a three-way deal involving the Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils. However, Tanev's immigration visa status is still up in the air.

"It's in the immigration process," DeBoer said. "I think everyone's cautiously optimistic that he'll meet us in San Jose. That's the last I heard."

Through 56 games with Calgary this season, Tanev has 14 points (1-13-14). He ranked second overall in the NHL with 171 blocked shots and fourth on the team in plus-minus with a +16. He's fifth in average TOI per game (19:50) and served as an alternate captain for the Flames.

With just 19 games remaining in the regular season, the Stars hope the visa issues can be solved quickly to give Tanev enough time to develop chemistry with his new teammates.

    DeBoer, however, isn't too concerned.

"I look at the team he's coming from," DeBoer said. "It's definitely not going to be a 360 from what he's been playing. Then you look at the player. He's a smart guy that's played on multiple teams. I'm not concerned about getting him up to speed."

    Hanley On Waivers

The Stars placed defenseman Joel Hanley on waivers, the team announced Monday.

The 32-year-old Hanley, who signed with Dallas in 2018, has not scored a goal and has three assists (0-3-3) in 32 games this season. In 183 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes and Stars, the 5-11, 186-pound Hanley has recorded two goals and 25 assists (2-25-27).

"I think the guys will individually reach out to him," DeBoer said. "He was an important guy in our dressing room from a popularity point of view. But that's this time of year. There's all kinds of those distractions... trade rumors, actual trades, waivers, roster. That's life in the NHL."

    Seguin and Dadonov Injury Updates

DeBoer gave an update on the status of forward Tyler Seguin and Evgenii Dadonov, who have each battled injuries that have kept them sidelined.

Seguin participated in Monday's morning skate, but is still dealing with a lower-body injury that has plagued him much of the season, although he played through it until a February 22 road game against the Ottawa Senators.

Seguin has been ruled week-to-week and is not expected to leave with the team when they travel to San Jose. In 58 games this season, Seguin has 45 points (20-25-45) with a plus-minus of +9.

DeBoer, however, isn't using Seguin's absence as a crutch and expects Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment to step up their game in Seguin's absence.

"I think at the end of the day, Duchene and Marchment have to grab that line and go," DeBoer said. "We can't wait for Tyler Seguin to come back. That's what we're looking for. Whomever we plug in there, those two guys have to drive the line."

Dadonov, who has been out since suffering a lower-body fracture February 10 against the Montreal Canadiens, is not cleared for weight-bearing. Dadonov has 23 points (12-11-23) in 50 games this season.
