THN's Stars site is continuing our player-by-player look at Dallas' lineup this coming season. In this file, we're turning our attention to second-line winger Mason Marchment.
As we get closer to the NHL’s 2024-25 regular season, The Hockey News’ Dallas Stars team website is posting an ongoing series of player projections for the Dallas Stars. We began with captain Jamie Benn, and Tyler Seguin Thursday, and Friday, we examined Stars forward Roope Hintz. In this file, we’re moving on to winger Mason Marchment.
At 29 years old, Marchment is somewhat of a late bloomer, but he set new career-highs on offense in Dallas this past season, and he’s a key top-six forward for the Stars:
Career: 54 goals, 142 points in 240 games
2023-24 Statistics: 22 goals, 53 points in 81 games
Salary Cap Hit: $4.5 million, through 2025-26
Summary of 2023-24 Season: In addition to Marchment’s career-highs on offense last season, he also posted three goals and five points in 13 playoff games. He’s not afraid to use his 6-foot-4 frame to help him in and around the net, and his numbers last year are more impressive when you consider he averaged only 15:04 of ice time per game.
That total could increase after the ripple effect of Joe Pavelski’s retirement washes over the Stars’ group of forwards, and Marchment is only two years away from unrestricted free agency, so the motivation to do big things is there for him. If he wants a raise from the $4.5 million salary he’s currently earning, Marchment and his individual numbers need to continue improving.
Projections For 2024-25 Season: As per THN Lineups, Marchment will start the season on Dallas’ second line, along with center Matt Duchene and winger Tyler Seguin. That’s a lot of offensive wizardry for Marchment to benefit from, and if he rewards Stars coach Peter DeBoer with consistent contributions on offense, Marchment will see his time-on-ice average increase to 16-17 minutes per night.
Marchment doesn’t have to put the Stars on his shoulders and carry them to victory. In the grand scheme of things, he’s below players such as Duchene, Jason Robertson, Seguin, Jamie Benn and Wyatt Johnston on Dallas’ depth chart, but Marchment can still contribute meaningful minutes for the Stars as they pursue a Cup victory.
Ideally, you’d like to see Marchment’s playoff numbers improve, as, now that he’s got 41 games of playoff experience, he knows what it takes to succeed in the post-season. But for the moment, and for the early part of the season, Marchment has to bring at least as much as he brought to the table last season, and hopefully for DeBoer and Stars brass, he’ll bring more than that. Marchment is a notable piece of the puzzle for Dallas, and his challenge now is to be consistently in the 20-30-goal area this season and beyond.
