The Dallas Stars have announced that they re-signed Jamie Benn to a one-year deal.

Benn was drafted by the Stars and has spent his entire career in Dallas, so there was no question on if he was coming back, but how he can come back. It has been no secret that the Stars are tight on money going into this season, but Benn let the Stars front office know that he would do what was best for the team. And he kept his word.

The captain's salary is $1 million dollars, with the potential to add $3 million of performance bonuses throughout the season. The bonuses do not count against the salary cap until the end of the season and if there is any extra money left over, it will go towards the bonuses. If the left over money does not cover the remaining amount of bonuses, it will roll over to next season and an overage charge will be added. Even the NHL charges overdraft fees.

Benn has played 1192 regular season games with the Stars and in that time has tallied 399 goals, 557 assists and 956 points. The 35 year-old thought he potted his 400th goal on two different occasions and it got called back both times, leaving Benn waiting for that milestone until next season.

With Benn's new contract, the Stars have about a million dollars and still have three roster spots to fill. General manager Jim Nill still has some loose ends to tie up before free agency starts on July 1. This includes picking a new head coach, as Nill stated he wanted the new coach to have some say in the moves he makes moving forward.
