With only six games left in the regular season, the Dallas Stars reached new heights in their 5-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports - Stars Set Franchise Record in Edmonton Win

Usually, a 5-0 scoreline against a playoff team like the Edmonton Oilers is enough to get people's attention across the NHL, yet somehow the massive win was not all the Dallas Stars had to celebrate Wednesday.

Jake Oettinger posted his second of back-to-back shut outs, 20-year-old Wyatt Johnston was the first on the team to hit 30 goals and Dallas set a new franchise record win streak with eight wins in a row.

Meanwhile, the Stars maintained first in the Western Conference and second in the league, only a point behind of the New York Rangers in the President's Trophy race after the Rangers won a penalty-filled game against the Devils. The top two teams were both on full display on national television, with the New York game leading into the Dallas game on TNT.

The Stars came out strong in the first period with Radek Faksa getting on the board just two minutes into the first period. A great play by Craig Smith in the neutral zone to turn over Leon Draisaitl, one of Edmonton's top players, led to the fourth line contribution that set the tone for the rest of the night. The rest of the period had chances on both ends and tilted in the Oilers favor as they finished the period with 16 shots on goal to the Stars 10. Oettinger was locked in from the first whistle onward.

The second period came with an onslaught of goals for the Stars, scoring four goals in just 5:48 minutes of play towards the end of the period. Dallas was able to make the most of the Oilers hemorrhaging defense. It started with Tyler Seguin's 23rd goal of the season on the power play on a back door pass from Miro Heiskanen.

Shortly after scoring the second goal, Johnston took a hooking penalty. Dallas was able to kill the penalty and when Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse picked an ill-advised time to pinch down in the offensive zone, the Stars were suddenly on a four-on-one with Johnston coming out of the box to join the rush. Thomas Harley looked left while making a no-look pass to his right to Johnston, who made no mistake and extended the lead to 3-0, potting his 30th goal of the season.

The onslaught continued just after, with Jamie Benn redirecting a Logan Stankoven shot past Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard. The Stars didn't stop there, and 22 seconds later, the fourth line contributed again as a falling Faksa got the puck to Sam Steel who was all alone out in front. Steel was able to make Pickard commit before elevating it up and over him.

The third period was the mostly uneventful for the Stars. A few quality chances lingered for both teams, but the game was all but over when the period started. The main goal for the Stars was to protect Oettinger's shutout, and they did just that. It was the second time this season the Stars kept Connor McDavid off the score sheet.

The Stars only have six more games left and hold their own destiny for pretty much any outcome they could imagine. The President's Trophy is within reach, and while that would be a fun trophy to collect on the way to the playoffs, the Stanley Cup is the only goal that matters. The Stars play the Winnipeg Jets and the Colorado Avalanche once more before wrapping up the season. The Stars and Avalanche are still close in the standings and those could be a huge two points to secure the Central Division crown.

Next up after two days of rest is a back-to-back on the road in Chicago and Colorado. The Chicago game is a 2:30 p.m. matinee, and then it's back to the national stage with an 8 p.m. CDT puck drop on ESPN.
