A huge 5-4 comeback win for Dallas Tuesday night highlighted both the Stars recent streak of wins and the continued demise of the New York Rangers.
The Stars went to the Big Apple to battle the Rangers in the first of a four-game road trip. Dallas was in the midst of a six-game point streak and was looking to extend it to seven against a struggling New York team who have had an abysmal stretch of losses over their last 20 contests.
The Stars lost to the Rangers in the midst of that stretch on home ice back in December and were on the hunt to redeem themselves after outplaying them significantly in the first matchup.
Dallas got off to a quick 3-0 hole in the first period thanks to two goals from Alexis Lafreniere, but were able to right the ship on a power play opportunity and later cut the lead to 3-2 going into the first intermission.
In the second period, a perfect backhand shovel from Jason Robertson beat Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick to tie the game 3-3, and it felt like Dallas had all the momentum to win the game after the Rangers fell apart.
However, late in the third period, Thomas Harley was called for a delay of game penalty and Vincent Trochek capitalized with a tip-in goal in front of Jake Oettinger for his second goal of the game to give New York the 4-3 lead.
Harley would redeem himself with a game-tying goal thanks to some hard work from Sam Steel to get it to the red-hot defenseman to wrist it past Quick to tie it 4-4.
In overtime, New York took a penalty to put Dallas on a 4-on-3 power play, and Jamie Benn tipped in the game winner after shoving defenseman Adam Fox out of the way to gain positioning in front of the net. Dallas completed the comeback with the 5-4 overtime win, and the Rangers skated off dejectedly once again.
