Two Key Pieces Loaned to Texas Stars, Dumba Retroactively Placed on Injure Reserve

Matej Blumel and Alexander Petrovic were sent down to the AHL's Texas Stars on Sunday.

The Dallas Stars have been fortunate the last couple years to avoid the injury bug for the most part, but after missing some key players at the end of last season and into the playoffs, General Manager Jim Nill made a point to acquire some depth this off-season.

Nill made sure Dallas had extra depth on both offense and defense, as well as making sure he stacked the AHL Texas Stars to ensure that if an injury occurred, there was no reason to panic and it would be easy to just call someone up to fit right into the lineup.

Even though the Stars front office made all of these moves and had pieces in place, the hockey gods had their own joke to play. Since the beginning of the season only 10 days ago the Stars have lost Matt Dumba, Tyler Seguin and Sam Steel. Brendan Smith was also a question mark going into yesterday's game, but ended up being able to play. Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson and Mavrik Bourque missed time in training camp, and Borque's injury led into the beginning of the season as well.

Dumba took an awkward tumble into the boards after a collision with Casey Cizikas  during his second shift of the game. He finished out the period but never returned. Three days later Dallas called up Alexander Petrovic from the Texas Stars. Yesterday it was announced that Dumba was retroactively placed on the injured reserve list.

Ahead of the San Jose Sharks game, head coach Pete DeBoer announced that Seguin had tweaked something and out of precaution, he would not be playing. However, Bourque was finally healthy and would make his season debut. Seguin was listed as day-to-day and it was not presented as being very serious.

"If it was a playoff game, he probably would have played," DeBoer said of the injury.

Suddenly, though, Seguin has now missed three games in a row. There hasn't been much in terms of updates on his condition, so it is unclear whether it is more serious than initially thought or not.

The Stars did not need to make any roster moves with Seguin's injury, as Bourque was able to slot in. But once it was announced that Steel tweaked something at the end of the game against the Washington Capitals, Matej Blumel was called up Saturday morning for the Edmonton Oilers game. Blumel made his season debut in the 4-1 win over Edmonton.

Today, it was announced that the Stars loaned Petrovic and Blumel back to Texas, meaning there could be good news incoming about any of the injured players. However, it is more likely that this is simply a paper transaction to accrue more cap space, as the Stars don't play again until Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Come Tuesday, Dallas will tackle the injury list and figure out whether or not either of these two players need to be recalled or not.
