The Detroit Red Wings will pick 15th in this year's NHL Draft, as decided by Tuesday's NHL Draft Lottery.
This marks the fourth straight year that the Red Wings have not moved up or down in the lottery. Detroit entered the Draft Lottery with a 97.9% chance to end up picking 15th, with a 1.1% chance to rise to fifth or sink to 16th.
The Red Wings' 15th overall pick will be the latest overall position of their own picks since 2016, the last time they made the playoffs and were slated to pick 16th. However, they didn't actually pick there. They traded that pick to Arizona during the draft in order to move Pavel Datsyuk's contract when he decided to leave for the KHL. The Coyotes got Jacob Chychrun with that 16th overall pick, while the Red Wings got Dennis Cholowski at 20th with the first rounder they received from Arizona.
Detroit has gained a lot of talent from its past few drafts. Last year, it picked ninth with its own first round pick, selecting Nate Danielson. Danielson was just named WHL Player of the Week after leading his Portland Winterhawks to the WHL Championship Final. The year before that netted Marco Kasper at eighth, who is playing for AHL affiliate Grand Rapids in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Whoever the Red Wings select at 15th will join a stocked prospects cupboard featuring those two, 2023 first-rounder Axel Sandin Pellikka and 2021 first-rounder Sebastian Cossa, among some other prospects selected outside of the first round.
The Red Wings have eight picks in this year's NHL Draft, including their own first, second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh round picks, as well as Dallas' fourth round pick and New Jersey's seventh rounder.
The San Jose Sharks earned the first overall pick in the Draft Lottery, which they're likely to use on projected first overall pick Macklin Celebrini, a Canadian forward out of Boston University.
The NHL Draft is scheduled for June 28-29 in Las Vegas, televised from the Las Vegas Sphere as commissioner Gary Bettman announced during ESPN's Draft Lottery presentation.
