Former Red Wing Continues Monster Season

This former Detroit Red Wings player can't stop doing good things.

Upon his arrival, Todd McLellan revitalized Detroit's spirit, but with the Red Wings sputtering again, can he pull the same trick again?

Good help is sometimes hard to find.

The Detroit Red Wings have certainly found good help in Todd McLellan, their new head coach. Unfortunately, the head coach doesn't play games.

The Red Wings are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. While it would be nice to have more help, the team has rebounded well since McLellan took over.

Elsewhere, one former Red Wings defender continues their tremendous season. Jake Walman had another impressive performance during a season that has been chock-full of them.

In a thrilling 7-5 loss to the Nashville Predators, Walman scored one of the San Jose Sharks' five goals.

Additionally, he fired three shots on net, blocked four of the team's nine blocked shots, and played a team-high 22:04. Not a bad game for a player who was traded for magic beans.

That brings Walman's totals to six goals, 21 assists, and 27 points on the season. He's averaged 22:42 over his 37 games this year.

Walman has become the Sharks' number-one defender. He leads their blueline in average ice time per game (22:42) and powerplay time (2:43). He's third in even-strength (17:33) and penalty kill ice time (2:26).

At this point in the season, Red Wings fans can only dream about what might have been had Walman remained with the team. It's possible that he wouldn't have been granted the same opportunity in Detroit, with the flock of blossoming young defenders vying for NHL positions.

Regardless, he would have done great under McLellan. But now, we'll (likely) never know.
