Tonight at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, Denver and Boston University, then Michigan and Boston College will vie for places in Saturday night's national title game as the puck drops on the 2024 men's Frozen Four.
On the most recent episode of The Silky Mitten State, my co-host Connor Earegood and I discussed the two match-ups.
In the evening's first game (Denver and BU), both teams have the makings of a national champion in the way they blend experience and youthful explosiveness. Both have played in recent Frozen Fours (DU winning the '22 title, BU falling in the semis last year in Tampa), and both have projected top talents for June's forthcoming NHL Draft (BU's Macklin Celebrini is expected to be the top pick, while DU's Zeev Buium shouldn't last until pick number 10). BU does have a slight edge in goal, which leaves Connor and myself leaning in their direction. Here's an excerpt from our conversation:
The evening's second game pits two of college hockey's most explosive teams in BC and Michigan. Against BC, Michigan takes on a new identity in its third consecutive Frozen Four as the veteran team, compared to the young and top-pick laden Eagles. I expect the result tonight to be determined by the two teams' discipline at each blue line. Here's an excerpt from our discussion of the match-up:
