An update on the health of Patrick Kane, Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, and Jeff Petry ahead of tomorrow's game against the Bruins
This afternoon at the BELFOR Training Center in Little Caesars Arena, the Detroit Red Wings held their usual recovery skate after Sunday's game and ahead of tomorrow evening's game in Boston. The session offered a chance for an update on a number of health concerns across the Red Wing lineup.
Chief among those concerns is the injury that forced goaltender Cam Talbot out of yesterday's game. Talbot did not skate Monday, and after practice, coach Derek Lalonde says, "Cam's getting evaluated by a doctor this afternoon, so we'll get a little bit more feel on where he's at [then]. Probably have a better feel in the morning." When asked whether Talbot would travel with the team to Boston and on to Thursday's game in Ottawa, Lalonde replied, "could be depending on how that evaluation goes today." Lalonde did confirm that goaltender Alex Lyon (placed retroactively on IR to Nov. 27 this morning) would not be making the trip.
Because of the two goaltending injuries, Detroit recalled 2021 first round pick Sebastian Cossa under emergency conditions this morning, having already called up Ville Husso when Lyon initially went down last week.
Lalonde explained that it's not yet clear whether Cossa will be called upon for a start or merely as a backup, saying, "Tomorrow was going to be a scheduled Husso start no matter what happened yesterday [i.e. before Talbot's injury]. Obviously, Huss was thrown into action yesterday, so we'll get through tomorrow with Ville's start and re-evaluate where we are for Thursday. We'll have a better feel where Cam's at too."
Meanwhile, the Red Wings are also dealing with injuries at forward and on defense. Winger Patrick Kane (who hasn't played since Nov. 23 against the Bruins) took some part in today's practice but will not play tomorrow night. "A little bit closer I would say," Lalonde said of Kane's status. "[Was able to] get through half a practice today but obviously didn't take the line reps or power play reps at the end...I know he won't be available for tomorrow. We'll hope for Thursday."
Defenseman Jeff Petry (who did play yesterday against the Canucks) did not skate today. Per Lalonde, his status is up in the air for tomorrow: "Petry actually had a little lower body pre-game yesterday in the off-ice warm-up but got through the game, so he needed a day today. We'll see where he's at for tomorrow."
Absent Kane and Petry, here's how the Red Wings lined up during the practice:
To summarize, Lyon and Kane will both miss tomorrow's game in Boston with certainty. Talbot's status is fully dependent on his evaluation this afternoon. Petry has a chance to play tomorrow, but his status is not certain either.
