An update on the health of Patrick Kane and Michael Rasmussen heading into the Red Wings' Monday night game against the New York Islanders
DETROIT—This afternoon, the Detroit Red Wings (8-10-2) held practice ahead of their trip to New York Islanders for a Monday night game at UBS Arena on Long Island. At that practice, forwards Patrick Kane and Michael Rasmussen (both of whom played Saturday night against the Boston Bruins) did not participate.
After practice, coach Derek Lalonde provided an update on their status: "Maintenance days for both of them. Hope to have both tomorrow, but they're battling something upper body."
In their absence at today's skate, Detroit had Christian Fischer filling double duty in Rasmussen's spot, while Jonatan Berggren hopped up the lineup to fill Kane's role beside Alex DeBrincat and Marco Kasper on the second line.
Joe Veleno has been a healthy scratch in each of the past two games, but he is poised to fold back into the lineup against the Islanders. "Assertiveness, hard, hard to play against, win some battles," Lalonde replied, when asked what he's looking for out of Veleno. "He gets a little passive in his game, and there's times when he's assertive with his game, and he's a very effective player, so that'll be his challenge when he goes back in. I'd expect getting him back in, no matter what the scenario
Lalonde also noted that Alex Lyon will start in goal. Lyon has had two successful outings against the Isles already this season, including a 30-save shutout on Oct. 22 on Long Island and a 22 saves on 23 shots performance Thursday.
