The Detroit Red Wings wear what is universally acknowledged to be one of the best uniforms in American sports.  From the team's on-ice success and 11 Stanley Cups to a starring role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.  Today, the team announced an update to that jersey that is likely anathema to a significant portion of its fan base.

This morning, the Red Wings announced that Priority—a Michigan-based waste management company—would be sponsoring the first ever game jersey advertisement in the franchise's history.

Detroit had already been using an advertising patch on its practice jerseys (BELFOR Property Restoration, which also sponsors the team's "performance center" within Little Caesars Arena) and also already wore an advertisement for Meijer on its helmets in games and practice, but, to state the obvious, an advertisement on team's iconic game jerseys is a different rubicon to cross.

The patch itself is about as non-invasive as it could be—a white patch on the home red and a red patch on the road white—but it is nonetheless far from a popular development within the team's fan base, which has long held the team's clean and iconic sweater in high esteem.

Entering the season, 17 of the NHL's 32 teams had an in-game jersey patch of some kind, including three Original Six teams (the Bruins, Maple Leafs, and Canadiens).  If there is any consolation to fans disappointed by the news, perhaps it comes in the fact that (because of the iconic nature of the jersey) the deal to secure the patch for Priority is rumored to be among the most valuable around the league.

The patch will make its debut tonight, when the Red Wings host the New York Islanders at LCA.
