Today, via a social media video, Detroit announced jersey numbers for its four new additions
Early this afternoon, the Red Wings announced jersey numbers for their four newcomers, via a video-game inspired social media vide dubbed "Cast-a-Wings." Avatars for Cam Talbot, Erik Gustafsson, Tyler Motte, and Vladimir Tarasenko (each wearing his jersey from last season) cast lines and reeled in first their new Red Wing jerseys and then their new numbers.
Talbot chose 39, Gustafsson 56, Motte 14, and Tarasenko 11. The last announcement was the one that had Detroit fans most intrigued. The number 10 wore to finish last season in Florida is retired in Detroit for Alex Delvecchio, while the 91 he's worn throughout the rest of his career has been informally but notoriously not officially been retired by the Red Wings for Sergei Fedorov.
Talbot also appears to have made a choice informed by an informal Red Wing jersey retirement. Though he wore 39 in his one year in Calgary, Talbot has spent the rest of his career in number 33. However, even if it's not officially retired, no Red Wing has worn the number since current assistant GM Kris Draper retired in 2011.
