Stalled negotiations reveal a massive valuation gap as Detroit demands a premium haul for their captain, leaving Minnesota’s pursuit of the star center in prospect-driven limbo.

On Tuesday, NHL insider Frank Seravalli addressed the many rumors swirling around Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin and his reported interest in joining the Minnesota Wild, adding context to why a deal with Larkin's reported top landing spot has yet to come together.

Appearing on the radio show Flames Now, Seravalli said talks between the Red Wings and Wild have stalled largely because the two sides are not aligned on the centerpiece of the return. Minnesota reportedly wanted to make 22-year-old Danila Yurov, the 24th overall pick in 2022, the main piece of the package, and Detroit is reportedly not interested.

"I think in trade talks, the Red Wings have balked a little bit about the quality of Danila Yurov being one of the centerpieces," Seravalli said.

Several packages have been reported as targets for Detroit, most recently, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported the Red Wings are seeking two A-level prospects, a top-nine forward and a first-round pick. In the past, the team was reportedly looking for a top-six forward and future assets. The Wild have likely explored both ideas, but Yurov as the centerpiece likely doesn't work, and for good reason.

The 22-year-old Russian is off to a decent start this season with five points in ten games, but he managed just 27 points in 73 games in his NHL debut campaign last year. That likely makes him a top-nine forward in Detroit's eyes, while Minnesota may believe he can be better and develop into a top-six player.

Yurov is a center, which could be useful on Detroit's second line behind Emmett Finnie, who would remain the team's top center. Still, his quality is likely the biggest point of contention between the two sides.

Detroit likely wouldn't mind adding Yurov, but would want more alongside him, like two A-level prospects and a first-round pick. Minnesota holds its first-round picks for the next three seasons, so that part shouldn't be an issue with the challenge being the remaining pieces.

If the Wild could part with two first-rounders, they would still need to move one more asset, and the prospect cupboard is thin outside of Charlie Stramel, the 21st overall pick in 2023. That could lead Minnesota to believe Detroit is asking for too much.

Still, the two clubs appear to be in conversation, and Minnesota does seem to be where Larkin prefers to go, based on reports. With some of the assets mentioned, a deal could be within reach.

The question is whether a return package including Yurov, Stramel and two first-round picks would be on the table, and whether both sides would agree to it. While many had ruled out the Wild as a landing spot for Larkin, Minnesota appears to be working hard to make it a possibility.
