Oh, Mondays.

Steve Yzerman moves like a thief in the night. No one knows when he will strike, but he’s not afraid to strike when the iron is hot.

The Detroit Red Wings are coming off a 5-4 overtime victory over the Anaheim Ducks. They have done something almost equally puzzling – they’ve made a trade with them.

The Red Wings have traded goalie Ville Husso to the Ducks for future considerations.

At first blush, this is a puzzling trade for the Red Wings. Trading someone away for magic beans has bitten them before (see: Jake Walman trade), but this deal has less chance of doing that.

What is nice about this deal for the Red Wings is they free up salary cap space. With this trade, they move $4.75 million off of their books. How massive that is can’t be underplayed. They now have $10.8 million in cap space.

Husso has primarily been an AHL goalie this season. He’s been lights out in the minors, posting an 8-4-0 record with a 2.70 goals against average (GAA), a .912 save percentage (SV%), and two shutouts.

He’s been less successful at the NHL level. This season, he’s played in nine games. He has a 1-5-2 record, 3.69 GAA and a .866 SV%.

This trade should raise the eyebrows of Red Wings fans. Could Yzerman have another iron in the fire? It is foolish to think otherwise.

Let the trade frenzy (and speculation) begin. What a way to end a Monday.
