Red Wings Prospect Named MSU Captain

2021 Red Wings draft pick Red Savage is set to wear the "C" for Michigan State this season

    Red Wings Prospect Timelines

This morning, the Michigan State hockey team announced its leadership for the upcoming season, and 2021 Red Wings fourth round pick Red Savage is slated to assume the "C" as captain of the Spartans.

Savage spent the first two seasons of his NCAA career at Miami (Oh.), before transferring to MSU for his junior campaign, during which he put up 10 goals and 17 assists in 38 games as the Spartans won the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships.

"It's been a lot of fun so far," says Savage in February of life in East Lansing. "It's obviously a big change for me coming to the Big Ten and playing at such a big school and the history behind the school and everything. It's been a lot of fun. We have a really talented team and a really hard-working team. Makes coming to the rink every day that much easier, especially when we're stringing wins together like we have been."

Clearly, Savage hasn't just been having fun but also making a positive impact on the MSU dressing room, given that he will now don a letter after just one season for coach Adam Nightingale.

As an NHL prospect, Savage's ceiling is not exactly unbounded, but he is a smart and responsible player that can play well in any situation.  27 points were nearly double his sophomore production at Miami (14 points), so perhaps that offense can keep growing as the Spartans look to build on their B1G success and translate it to the NCAA Tournament.  If they are to make that work, Savage—as well as fellow Red Wing draft choice Trey Augustine—will have to help steer the ship.
