Three Points from Mazur Helps Extend Griffins' Point Streak to 17 Games

With a 4-3 win last night over the Iowa Wild in the friendly confines of Van Andel Arena, the Grand Rapids Griffins extended their present point streak to 17 consecutive games.

Carter Mazur—whom the Red Wings selected with the 70th pick in the 2021 NHL Draft—led the Griffins' charge, scoring and providing two assists.  After Iowa's Kevin Conley scored late in the first period, Mazur provided an answer within a minute to ensure Grand Rapids didn't trail long.

After the game, Mazur said, "especially with our 17-game point streak, it's pretty huge to get the first one, especially to keep the momentum going.  It's hard to say exactly why scoring the first goal changes a lot, but it does."

Entering the third period, the game was tied at two before Jonatan Berggren scored (with assists from Mazur and William Wallinder) five minutes and 39 seconds in to propel the Griffins to a 3-2 lead.  Berggren now has a four-game point streak and 25 points in his last 22 games.  When asked after the game for the secret to his recent success, Berggren was quick to point to his teammates, saying "Me, Marco [Kasper], and Mazur have found some good chemistry right now."

10 minutes later, Zach Aston-Reese added a fourth (with Mazur picking up another primary assist) to insulate Grand Rapids from an eventual 6-on-5 Wild goal.  Michael Hutchinson made 28 saves on 31 shots in net to secure the victory.  Coach Dan Watson credited his team for "another great third period," praising the group for "guys just showing up to work and getting the job done."

The Griffins are back in action at home this evening against the Rockford Ice Hogs, with a chance to bring their point streak to within one game of the franchise's all-time record (19 straight between early February and late March in 2015).
