At Tuesday's Detroit Red Wings practice, a few hours before the team travels to New York for a Wednesday night showdown with the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, neither captain Dylan Larkin nor defenseman Justin Holl were participants.
Though Larkin taking a "maintenance day" would not be a new development, coach Derek Lalonde revealed after practice that this time around Larkin would miss game action for the first time this season.
Lalonde said that Larkin has been dealing with nagging injuries for a little while and that because he isn't traveling with the team for the Ranger game he is also "unlikely" to play Thursday night, when the Red Wings return to Detroit for a game with the Chicago Blackhawks. "I think we'd hope and expect him back for Montreal Saturday," said Lalonde, adding that he Larkin is "day to day" and won't go on Injured Reserve.
Of Holl, Lalonde said that his status for Wednesday's game is uncertain, and if it turns out that he cannot go against the Rangers, Lalonde expects to call up a defenseman from Grand Rapids "for a little insurance."
Finally, there was good news on the injury front in that Lalonde said Jake Walman—who missed last Friday and Sunday's games following a flare up of the injury he endured while the Red Wings were in Sweden—would be available for Wednesday.
