The 2022 Red Wings second round pick shows no mercy to an unsuspecting KHL goaltender

Yesterday, the KHL shared a clip of a dazzling shootout goal from Red Wings prospect Dmitry Buchelnikov.  The Red Wings 2022 second round pick took a wide route, swept in on net, sent the goalie the wrong way with a pump fake, then guided the puck into a vacant net.

It was a masterclass in shootout technique: dual threat puck position, a wide start, and a change in speed to disorient the goaltender.

Buchelnikov is one of Detroit's most intriguing prospects and one of its most mysterious, because of the ambiguity around his timeline to the NHL.  He scored 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points in 55 games last year in the KHL while on loan at Admiral Vladivostok.

He projects as a flashy offense-first winger with the hand and foot speed to cause defenders fits.  He is expected to spend at least one more season in Russia, once again going out on loan from SKA to HC Vityaz, based in Balashikha, just outside Moscow.
