Edmonton Oilers fans might want to take a deep breath before starting any “panic threads” about Connor McDavid’s contract.
Despite a lack of official numbers or headlines about an extension, NHL insider Frank Seravalli is telling everyone to chill: there’s no reason to worry.
In fact, it kinda felt like the NHL insider was poking fun at Oilers Nation for losing sleep over a situation that hasn't even reached the 'let's talk' phase.

Yes, it’s true—McDavid’s extension talks haven’t really begun to get serious. News of him getting close to an agreement certainly hasn't hit the media spotlight, and no digits have been exchanged yet. But according to Seravalli, this isn’t a sign of turmoil.
“Should people be nervous? The answer is no,” he said. Apparently, the Oilers aren’t hiding from the inevitable; they’re just waiting for the superstar to “pick his head up off the pillow” before kicking negotiations into gear.

What exactly did the NHL insider say?
The quote from Seravalli in his recent video update is below:
To give you a quick update, it’s been a very busy social summer for Connor McDavid, as everyone saw on social media. He was overseas in Europe at best friend Leon Draisaitl‘s wedding. We all saw the videos of him on jet skis with Leon Draisaitl and the now infamous photo that he posted of himself smoking a dart at his own wedding… numbers haven’t even been exchanged yet they’re still kind of very early on in the process.-
Let’s be honest, the whole scenario sounds almost comically simple.
There isn’t a high-stakes chess match unfolding here. The two sides might not even be playing checkers.
This is going to be as simple as negotiations get in the NHL. McDavid will call up GM Stan Bowman or CEO Jeff Jackson and inform them of his decision. At best, they'll run a couple of alternative options by him and his agent. McDavid will respond, and the deal he wants will get done.
At that point, it's about signing the papers and the Oilers figuring out how to make it happen, dealing with the dominoes that fall as a result.

Is this really even a negotiation? Probably not. It might be better categorized as a polite coordination between the best player in the world and a team that has no desire to let him think they're unwilling to work with what he feels is best.
Perhaps the worst about all of this for Oilers fans is the constant barrage of posts that come on social media and in fan forums from other teams. As long as McDavid remains unsigned, there will be a mix of tongue-in-cheek posts from other fan bases suggesting he's leaving. That will create a series of "meltdown” headlines. Because, let’s face it, when McDavid is involved, it's easy to convince Oilers fans that the sky might be falling.
Connor McDavid's Best Way Forward With Oilers
EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid stand to benefit from two unstoppable forces: a ballooning NHL salary cap and the pressure cooker of needing to win now.
But the reality is far more mundane—and far less panic-worthy—than some might think. The sky isn't falling. This is simply a test of patience.
So, for those hitting refresh on the Oilers’ front office X/Twitter account every five minutes: relax. There’s no ticking time bomb. There is no “contract crisis.” This is merely a superstar making a life-changing decision in his own time frame. The organization is ready to lock him down once he’s ready to talk numbers.
Grab a coffee, sit back, and let the Oilers do their thing. McDavid’s coming back; it’s just a matter of when the two sides make a plan to sit down together at the table.
