The  Edmonton Oilers plan to give 21-year-old Matt Savoie every chance to prove he belongs in the NHL this season — but that opportunity could vanish if the team shifts from development to all-in contention.

Allan Mitchell of The Athletic reports the former first-round pick will likely start on the Oilers’ second line alongside Leon Draisaitl, a prime spot to establish himself as a full-time NHLer. Whether he keeps that spot remains to be seen. And, it could depend on a few different factors.

Savoie has little left to prove in the AHL after a strong run with Bakersfield, and Draisaitl’s ability to elevate his linemates should make for a smooth transition. Mitchell believes Savoie “likely gets the first big push” among Edmonton’s forward prospects.

In other words, this is Savoie's spot to lose and if he performs, there should be no issues.

The catch is Edmonton’s championship window.

With rookie Isaac Howard also in the mix and the Oilers eyeing a Stanley Cup, the organization may not have the luxury of developing two young wingers at once. If Savoie struggles early or if the team needs an immediate upgrade, he could be dealt for a more established veteran at the trade deadline.

If the Oilers go that route, it likely means they've abandoned the plan to run with more youth, speed, and energy versus experienced core players. Last season’s reliance on veteran depth didn’t yield better results, but history shows a team in win-now mode may not have much patience if young prospects don't pan out or can't keep up.

Savoie’s offensive ceiling makes him a valuable long-term asset, but the Oilers are only worried about the long-term if it doesn't hurt their short-term chances.  GM Stan Bowman faces a difficult balance: staying the course with a promising prospect or cashing in for a playoff-ready addition.

For now, the Oilers hope Savoie is ready. If he isn't, how quickly they shift gears will be an intriguing storyline to watch this season.

Urgency is a funny thing. The Oilers have plenty of it.
