EDMONTON -- There is no sitting back and unwinding this summer.

Even during the weekend, Sam Gagner was spotted in the gym. He might not have a current contract with the Edmonton Oilers, but he's a fan favorite until the day he stops playing.
Gagner is in a fortunate position this offseason. He doesn't need to go through rehab for double hip surgery. Instead, he can focus on getting stronger and faster to prepare to play in the 2024-25 season.
On Saturday he was spotted with an old teammate.
In an Instagram story originally posted by Muskaka Hockey, Gagner is pictured working out side-by-side with Taylor Hall. Hall appears to be doing a deadlift while Gagner is performing a dumbbell lunge. Hall's 2023-24 season was cut short after he suffered an ACL injury.
Hall has had a rocky road since leaving the Oilers. The Calgary-born hockey player was traded to the New Jersey Devils the summer before the start of the 2016-17 season. In his second season with the team he secured his first career Hart Trophy with a 93 point regular season.

Hall was also nominated for the Ted Lindsay award that season. Ultimately, that trophy would go to Connor McDavid who led the league in scoring that season with 108 points.
Of course, Gagner and Hall were teammates on the Oilers at one point. For four seasons they played together in the early 2010's. Hall is preparing for his second season with the Chicago Blackhawks.
With training camps still over a month away, it will be interesting to monitor where Gagner decides to play next.
