Following a report from TSN's Ryan Rishaug that there hasn’t been a back-and-forth with dollars and terms to this point between the Edmonton Oilers and his agent. McDavid took center stage alongside Sam Reinhart and Sidney Crosby at Olympic Orientation in Calgary and answered questions about his contract status.
Risaugh had noted: "After taking some time to regroup after the season McDavid and agent Judd Moldaver of Wassermann are working through what the options are and what the ask will look like." He added that there was no firm timeline on things.

He explained that he is content to take his time with his contract situation and all options are on the table. His primary focus, outside of winning a Gold Medal with Team Canada, is to make sure he and the Oilers win the Cup.

When asked by Rishaug if his contract situation was something he would let linger into the season, McDavid responded that all options are pretty much on the table. He said he “doesn’t have a preference either way,” as to whether he signs right away or before the season starts. The focus was coming into the season prepared, but did note that he doesn’t want any distractions.
It wasn't clear if he believed talks about his status would cause said distraction.
As expected, no matter what McDavid would have said, the reactions to his comments varied. Some fans in other markets had fun with the idea that his being open to anything included leaving the Oilers. Others believed this was a definitive sign he was signing an extension, and would do so before the season started to ensure his team could focus.
