EDMONTON – Spending a little money never killed anyone.

Well, at least in terms of hockey.

The Edmonton Oilers have been wrestling with the salary cap all season long. The health of Evander Kane has been the primary focus in the cap-dance that Stan Bowman and company have been jiving to this season.

However, another veteran player will cost the team more money once the offseason hits. That player is Corey Perry.

Perry’s cap hit for the season was only $1.15 million. However, because of performance bonuses, it could rise to $1.4 million. With the regular season over, one of those bonuses will be paid out while another two have yet to cross the line.

The first bonus was $150,000 for playing 15 games or more. Perry played every game minus one this season.

The other two bonuses are tied to the team’s performance in the playoffs and how many games he plays in them. Perry will get a $50,000 bonus if the Oilers win the second round and he plays 50 percent of the games in round two, or 50 percent of the games from round one and two.

The third bonus for Perry will happen if the Oilers win the third round and he plays 50 percent of the games in round three, or 50 percent of the games from rounds one through three.

Why Perry's Bonuses Will Cost The Oilers Next Season

Here’s the catch: these bonuses will be added to next season’s cap hit. According to PuckPedia, “at the conclusion of the season, any performance bonuses earned are added to the team’s final cap hit. If that total exceeds the cap, the excess becomes a performance bonus carryover overage cap charge applied to the next season.”

Because the Oilers had dipped into their LTIR pool with Kane being sidelined, all of Perry’s bonuses will be added to next season’s cap hit.

For what he’s brought to the team in a depth role, he’s been worth every cent.
