Edmonton clears $9.25 million in cap space by sending the veteran blueliner to San Jose, landing young defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin as part of a blockbuster roster shakeup.

Darnell Nurse has been traded to the San Jose Sharks. In a deal that sees the Edmonton Oilers retain no money, Shakir Mukhamadullin and prospect Zack Sharp are coming back in return.

The trade frees up $9.25 million in cap space, and gives the Oilers a chance to spend money in other places. Edmonton was also busy on Wednesday, making another traded with the Buffalo Sabres, adding goaltender Devon Levi.

Mukhamadullin is a 24-year-old Russian defenseman. Originally drafted 20th overall by New Jersey in 2020, he came to San Jose in the massive 2023 Timo Meier trade.

He's a big, mobile blueliner (6-foot-4) known for a strong shot and offensive upside, though he's still developing defensively at the NHL level. He made his debut in January 2024 and has bounced between full-time duty and healthy scratches since — most recently posting five goals, 12 points, and 60 blocked shots over 46 games last season, while dealing with a couple of injuries.

He re-signed with San Jose on a one-year, $1 million deal in 2025 and is considered a candidate to lock down a full-time role in 2026-27.

Sharps, 6'2" has been playing in the NCAA with Michigan University. He posted 19 points over 37 games. He was originall drafted in the fourth round by the Sharks in 2025.
