Addressing claims of a sour departure, the new Sharks defenseman clarifies his final days in Edmonton and explains why a change of scenery was necessary for his career.
Former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse spoke to the San Jose media this week, answering questions about his trade to the Sharks and his exit from Edmonton. One reporter asked whether he saw this new chapter as a fresh opportunity, given that he might not have been a happy camper in his final days with his old team.
It might have seemed like an odd question; asking if a player no longer like the game of hockey. There were reasons to ask.
To the reporters' defense, Nurse often didn't look happy when he was speaking with the Edmonton-based media. He was grumpy and standoffish, sometimes sitting and often answering questions with one- or two-word answers. It wasn't always that way, but it often was.
I was in that room, and I could feel the tension after many games. It was the kind you could cut with a knife.
Some of that could have been his frustration with the state of the team. They weren't very good in 2024-25 and never really got rolling. It took them months to win three in a row, and like many other Oilers, Nurse often struggled.
Some of why he appeared so unhappy was that he felt like people were pointing fingers at him.
The question was whether he had lost his passion for the game in Edmonton. Was he ready to move on because he needed a new start, or was it because the Oilers were trying to move on without him? It was time for a change.
"Nah, I've always loved the game of hockey. It doesn't matter where you're playing," Nurse said. "I love the grind of it. I love every day. I was super fortunate for my time in Edmonton. I had a lot of amazing experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime."
He did admit, however, that all good things come to an end. "But ya, it was time for a change. For me, it's a fresh start. I'm looking forward to what I can bring to this group. I think I can bring a lot to the group and make this my new home and make it a big part of my life."
