One hockey insider reports that the Edmonton Oilers are shopping around one of their prospects.
The Edmonton Oilers have a razor thin margin of cap space to work with. As of right now they have $150,000 in cap space.
On the eve of the Oilers next game against the Carolina Hurricanes, we have some news regarding a player. It appears that the Oilers are looking for a new home for Philip Broberg.
Because of the minimal cap space available for the Oilers - as Kevin Weekes reported on X (Twitter) - it would need to be a dollar-in-dollar-out trade. Another option would be to recoup draft picks and/or unsigned prospects in exchange for Broberg.
A source told The Hockey News that the player "is unsatisfied and requested a trade."
It would make sense that Broberg requested a trade. For the 2023-24 season he has averaged 10:32 over the course of 10 games. His last game he averaged just 5:17 and has been a healthy scratch for the last four straight games.
If it's truly the end of the line for Broberg in Edmonton, it's an incredibly disappointing way to end his tenure. However, being a healthy scratch for the majority of the rest of the season would also be disappointing.
This will be something to monitor over the next week or so - particularly because of the Oilers' need to acquire a goalie upgrade. Broberg could be part of the package sent the other way in any trade.
