That is what today presents for one former Edmonton Oilers defender. William Lagesson was recalled earlier Monday from the AHL.

The 28-year-old defender will join the Detroit Red Wings as they prepare to play the San Jose Sharks tonight on the road.

Lagesson has played 11 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL this season. He had five points before his recall.

The young blueliner debuted professionally with the Oilers in the 2019-20 season. Lagesson dressed for eight games that year, where he mustered eight shots and played 11:52 on average per game.

At the 2022 trade deadline, he was sent to the Montreal Canadiens in a package to acquire Brett Kulak, who has become a solid fixture on the Oilers' blueline.

After spending the last two years with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks, Lagesson signed a one-year $775,000 contract with the Red Wings. However, due to the emergence of Simon Edvinsson, Lagesson fell to the AHL.

Despite this, his recall signals that the coaching staff believes in the young player. He hasn't had a true opportunity to solidify himself as an NHL regular. However, his 100 career NHL games show that he has just scratched the surface of his potential.

Now it's time to see when his new opportunity will afford him another appearance in the NHL.
