Chris Tanev will not be traded to the Edmonton Oilers.
EDMONTON -- As the Edmonton Oilers play the St. Louis Blues, the Calgary Flames are dismantling their team.
Chris Tanev has been traded away from the Flames - and reportedly - to the Dallas Stars. Frank Seravalli reported the full deal on Twitter.
In order to make the deal work the Flames and Stars needed the involvement of the New Jersey Devils. Because of the LTIR relief they have, they were about to acquire a fourth round pick for their trouble.
Unfortunately for the Oilers, this is less than an ideal outcome for this trade.
A trade happening between the two provincial rivals is definitely rare - but not impossible. The Oilers will need to look elsewhere to solidify their defense for a deep playoff run.
Just yesterday Pierre LeBrun on Insider Trading said that the Stars were the frontrunners for Tanev - and now we've seen that come to fruition.
Now we wait for the next domino to fall.
