A sudden injury to Devon Levi forces a roster shuffle ahead of Saturday's game against Toronto, leaving the crease in flux for an unknown length of time.

The Edmonton Oilers have placed goaltender Devon Levi on injured reserve (IR) and called up goaltender Matt Tomkins from the Bakersfield Condors, the team announced on Friday.

The call-up is under emergency conditions as the Oilers revealed Levi is not available for Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tomkins will serve as the backup to Tristan Jarry.

Jarry was set to go regardless, but the Levi injury is news. He finished Thursday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, winning in a shootout 6-5. It's unclear where the injury occurred, but it's a bad break as he was playing extremely well and had arguably earned the starting role.

Levi missed practice on Friday. How long he'll be away isn't yet known. Tomkins has six NHL games of experience and should be a suitable replacement for a short time. The hope is that Levi's issue is not long-term. Frederik Andersen is in Edmonton, but he's not ready to return to the ice.
