This study focused solely on first round draft picks. Some categories it took into consideration were: average points per game, the hit rate, awards count, relative efficiency, and playoff rate.
All of these factors were given a score and then weighted evenly to produce a winner. The Toronto Maple Leafs finished first, the Oilers second, the Colorado Avalanche third, the Vancouver Canucks fourth, and the Minnesota Wild fifth.

Between 2014 & 2020 the Oilers had seven first round draft picks: Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto, Evan Bouchard, Philip Broberg, and Dylan Holloway. Of those selections, only McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard remain with the team.
While the Oilers may have had a string of good luck in the first round of the draft, they’ll need more than their first rounders in order to win hockey’s ultimate prize.
