EDMONTON – Did anyone in Oil Country sleep?

The Edmonton Oilers had a busy Thursday night. It started with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens. It ended with a trade being announced.

Before the puck dropped, David Pagnotta and Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers were trading for San Jose Sharks defender Jake Walman. Because both teams were playing, nothing was made official beforehand.

But then, when the clock hit midnight on Friday, both teams simultaneously announced the deal.

The Oilers send a conditional first-round pick in 2026 along with Carl Berglund. In return, they get Walman. San Jose does not retain any salary in the deal.

The conditions on the 2026 first-round pick are as follows:

    • If the pick is in the top 12, Edmonton can send their 2027 first-round pick to San Jose instead.
    • If the Oilers choose to trade their 2027 first-round pick before the 2026 Trade Deadline, the 2026 first-round pick will automatically transfer to the Sharks without conditions.

What Are The Oilers Losing With Carl Berglund?

Berglund is a 25-year-old left-handed center who plays for the AHL's Bakersfield Condors. He has 12 points in 45 games this season.

The center has decent size. Berglund is listed as being 6-foot-2 and 207 lbs.

One thing is certain: Berglund is not a top prospect within the Oilers organization. He helps the Condors win hockey games, but he does so without significant offensive prowess.

According to PuckPedia, the Oilers now have $300,560 in cap space for the Trade Deadline (and this is without sending any players to the minors).

It might be too early to tell, but this trade already looks like a win in the Oilers books. Walman significantly improves the Oilers’ blueline and the pieces they gave up are either too far away from contributing to their team (2026 first-round pick) or had a slim chance of making the team (Berglund).

Soak it in Oil Country, soak it in.
