Oilers' Star Takes Over Skills Showdown
Richmond Hill native Connor McDavid put on a show for his hometown crowd.
Connor McDavid led the competition from beginning to end, and won a $1 million grand prize after winning the fastest skater, stick-handling, and accuracy competitions, and then the final obstacle course event to win overall.
He won with 25 points, followed by Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar at 20 points, Auston Matthews at 18 points, and William Nylander at 16 points.
The competitors of the final obstacle course were McDavid, Makar, Matthew Barzal, Matthews, J.T. Miller, and Nylander.
McDavid helped modify the competition by ditching the pre-taped events and trick-shot contest and focused on traditional hockey skills.
His skates were on fire early on in the fastest skater event, as he reached a time of 13.408 seconds. McDavid dominated the stick-handling event with a time of 25.755 seconds. He got his revenge on Barzal in this event, whose time was 13.519 seconds.
Barzal ironically beat McDavid in the same event in the 2020 competition.
He was closely followed by New York Islanders' Barzal at 26.929 seconds, who received four points for doing so, and the Toronto Maple Leafs' William Nylander at 27.272 seconds, who received three points for doing so.
He won the final obstacle course event, stickhandling the puck under six of the eight yellow arches, as well as making one shot in the narrow miniature net and two in the wide one before skating around the rest of the obstacles and making the final shot with a time of 40.606 seconds, beating Cale Makar's 43.435 seconds.
He has won the Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP award) three times, been made an All-Star twice, and is a four-time recipient of the Ted Lindsey award for most outstanding player, only the third player in history to do so.
McDavid also won the accuracy competition, scoring 4-for-4 in a time of 9.158 seconds, barely outstripping the impressive sniper Auston Matthews who achieved the same but only in less time at 9.158 seconds.
This secured him a spot in the Final Eight. His teammate, on the other hand, Leon Draisaitl, finished 10th in the same event.
