EDMONTON – Just another Monday night.
Well, for Canada’s neighbors it might be, but for Canada it certainly is not.
Noted Edmonton Oilers superfan Mark Carney will form the new Liberal Government in Canada. Carney was elected the new leader of the Liberal Party back in early March.

At the time of this writing, it is not known whether or not the Liberals will form a minority or majority government.
Additionally, the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, and the NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh, have both lost (or are projected to lose) their seats.
Carney ran in the Ottawa riding of Nepean and holds a substantial lead in votes with 210 of 229 polls reporting. With that win, he makes history by becoming the first individual to not hold office in an elected riding before becoming the elected Prime Minister.

Carney will also become the first Prime Minister who was born in the Northwest Territories. Additionally, he will be the first elected Prime Minister who was raised in Edmonton, Alberta.
On March 20th, Carney participated in a morning skate with the Oilers before they played against the Winnipeg Jets. Later on that day he made a housing announcement while still in Edmonton.
Carney lived in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories until he was six years old. He moved to Edmonton with his family, eventually graduating from St. Francis Xavier High School in 1983.
Ahead of Game 1 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Carney shared a message of support for the Oilers, “to the best team in hockey: you know what to do.”
