Connor McDavid might have some competition.

The four-time NHL fastest skater wasn't at the Oilers' skills competition on Sunday, but top prospect Matt Savoie picked up the slack at the AHL All-Star skills competition that same day. Savoie won the fastest skater competition in a landslide, with a time of 13.654 seconds.

Savoie beat out a crop of five other AHLers, including Buffalo Sabres prospect Isak Rosen and former Edmonton Oil Kings captain Trey Fix-Wolansky.

The 21-year-old winger also competed in the accuracy shooting competition, going 3-for-8, and scored for the Western Conference in the breakaway relay.

Savoie took the crown from current Washington Capitals forward Ethen Frank, who set the AHL record in 2022 and won again in 2023 as a member of the Hershey Bears. His 12.915 time is better than even the NHL record of 13.020, set by Connor McDavid in 2017.

The Oilers certainly know their way around fastest skater competitions. Apart from McDavid, who won three straight from 2017-19 and again last season, Oiler players also won the event in 2008 (Shawn Horcoff) and 2009 (Andrew Cogliano).

Savoie is second on the Bakersfield Condors with 12 goals and 31 points in 40 games as they sit seventh in the AHL's Pacific Division.

Savoie will play in the AHL All-Star Classic tonight on TSN at 7 p.m. Mountain time in Coachella Valley, California.
