Edmonton bolsters its crease by acquiring the former collegiate standout for a future pick, banking on the Devon Levi's high-end athleticism to stabilize their inconsistent goaltending situation.
The Edmonton Oilers have traded for goaltender Devon Levi. There was talk earlier this week that Edmonton had kicked tires on the netminder. After news broke that Connor Ingram was going to test the market, the Oilers made the trade in the early afternoon on Wednesday.
The Sabres are getting Edmonton's third-round pick in 2028.
Mark Spector of Sportsnet writes, "This would be a precursor to another move. Had better be." Bob Stauffer adds, "Could see the Edmonton Oilers add another goalie on top of Levi. "
Levi is a 24-year-old goaltender, drafted 212th overall by Florida in 2020 before being acquired by Buffalo in the 2023 Rasmus Ristolainen trade.
A standout at Northeastern University, Levi won the Mike Richter Award as college hockey's top goaltender and represented Canada internationally before turning pro. He debuted with the Sabres in 2023 and showed flashes of the athleticism and quickness that made him a top prospect, but his results have been inconsistent at the NHL level, bouncing between Buffalo and AHL Rochester.
He's played 39 games in the NHL, with a 3.29 goals against average and a .894 career save percentage.
