The Edmonton Oilers and forward Matthew Savoie are still hoping to get a deal done, but according to Savoie's agent, there haven’t been any contract extension discussions to date. “We haven’t, only because I think Edmonton’s in a unique position where they’re in a win-now mode.”

Savoie’s agent, Gerry Johannson of The Sports Corporation, joined Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer and explained, “Matt really likes it here, and we’d love him to stay here. I know he would. I think in talking to Stan that will come. But as we know, Edmonton is pretty focused on this year."

Understanding that there is a risk on both sides depending on the timing of the deal, Johansson added, "I think Matt is patient and really enjoys it here and did a good job last year, so we’re excited to see what he can do. I’m sure we’ll get down to that sooner than later.”  

The risk for the Oilers is twofold. First, if they sign him too early and invest heavily in him, they'll need to know that last season's totals were only the start of what Savoie can do. He played all 82 games, recording 37 points, including 18 goals. If he's a 20-goal guy for the rest of his career, the Oilers should feel confident in a long-term deal. Unfortunately, there's no way to know if that's what Savoie is. 

On the flip side, if Edmonton waits too long and Savoie turns up his 2025-26 production to another level entirely, it will be an expensive negotiation, particularly as the salary cap continues to rise. 

And, while it's a long shot, there is the threat of an offer sheet if Edmonton lets it get that far. 

It sounds like the Oilers have chosen to wait and see how Savoie performs before determining what kind of offer to table. This could ensure they know what they're getting in an extension, but the Oilers might be paying a bit more when all is said and done to have that certainty.
