The young Edmonton Oilers defender made headlines yesterday for his trade request.
The Edmonton Oilers are making news lately with their handling of Philip Broberg. The Swedish defenseman has had an up and down tenure with the team, which was reflected in the events that unfolded yesterday.
Philip Broberg.First, Kevin Weekes reported that the Oilers were looking for a team to trade Broberg to. He also mentioned that tease would need to be "dollar-in-dollar-out" given the cap situation of the Oilers.
Frank Seravalli reported later on that the team "had granted permission to Philip Broberg's camp to seek a trade". Seravalli also reported that the Oilers would like a player in return rather than draft picks for compensation.
Ryan Rishaug joined the conversation by speaking with Oilers GM Ken Holland. He reported that Holland said "I have not granted permission to Derrin (Broberg's agent) to shop Broberg."
He also reported Derrin Ferris' response to the rumors yesterday with the following, "This matter reflects both my and my client's frustration with the Oilers. I'm actively collaborating with Ken to address and resolve the issue privately."
Philip Broberg. Now today we have more news. After morning skate the media requested Broberg for an availability. After a long wait for the player to come out to answer questions, he didn't show up.
Stick taps to my fellow media members for wanting to speak with Broberg, but it's painfully obvious why he didn't come out to speak. The player is in a sticky situation and choosing to not speak to media is probably the right call for him.
