EDMONTON – Some teams have a large quantity of prospects.

Some teams have a good amount of prospects, and only a few are of the blue-chip, grade-A variety.

And then there is the Edmonton Oilers.

Part of the issue at hand for Stan Bowman is being able to sign prospects who are further down the development path in lieu of draft capital. Oilers fans are already seeing the fruit of that labor with the signings of Josh SamanskiDamien Carfagna, and David Tomasek last week.

However, Russian forward Maxim Beryozkin is one prospect already under team control that still needs a contract.

Beryozkin currently plays for Lokomotiv of the KHL. The 2020 fifth-round draft pick is having a great year in Russia. He finished the 2024-25 season with 42 points in 66 games, while playing 15:55 a night.

That success is continuing into the KHL playoffs. Lokomotiv swept their first-round opponent in a Best-of-Seven series. Beryozkin scored four points in four games, averaging 15:29 of ice time.

These numbers significantly improved from last year, when Beryozkin only recorded 30 points in 62 contests.

    Will The Oilers Sign Beryozkin?

The 6-foot-4 forward is in the final year of his KHL deal. Beryozkin’s contract expires on April 30th, 2025, meaning he could sign with the Oilers on May 1st.

The Oilers have a player here. Beryozkin will be one prospect to watch once the calendar hits May 1st. With Bowman’s knack for finding talent overseas, perhaps he is the missing ingredient for the Oilers to lock down this talented Russian.
