EDMONTON – Misery loves company.

The injury company is certainly adding up on Friday night.

The Edmonton Oilers entered their game against the San Jose Sharks without the services of Leon Draisaitl, Evander Kane, Trent Frederic, John Klingberg, and Jake Walman.

Now, a couple of other names can be added to the list: Mattias Ekholm and Zach Hyman.

Trending Oilers Stories

Mattias Ekholm

Ekholm exited the first period after playing 1:52. The Swedish defender tripped up twice on the same shift. He went down the tunnel, came out for a spin on the ice, and then went back down the tunnel.

Before coming back into action on Friday, Ekholm had missed seven straight games. Before then, he had scored six points in four games.

Zach Hyman

Hyman, on the other hand, left the game in the second period after playing 7:14. This is obviously a less than ideal scenario for the Oilers. They are forced to play the final period of the game with 11 forwards and five defenders.

Coincidentally, the Oilers had loaned Cam Dineen back to the Bakersfield Condors, who are experiencing their horrid injury fortune. It’s reasonable to suggest that the Oilers will be making a couple of emergency call-ups soon.

At the beginning of the third period the Oilers announced that Hyman and Ekholm would not return to the game.
